Chapter Seven

Caleb glanced over at a sleeping Annie and smiled. She looked so peaceful. It was close to eight in the morning. They had spent the whole night fucking and just enjoying one another.

He’d never brought a woman back to this apartment before. Annie was the first one.

She’ll be the only one.

Rubbing the back of his head, he got to his feet and went to the kitchen to start brewing some coffee. It was late.

Last night had been insane. He’d loved every second of it. He had expected Annie to enjoy a night of drinking and he’d been more than prepared to give her the time to enjoy it, and to be their designated driver, but she wasn’t having any of it. When she’d asked the barman for shot glasses, he might have fallen in love with her. She wouldn’t party unless he could party. They were in this together.

He pressed the speed dial for Ryan’s number and waited. He only had to wait a couple of rings before Ryan answered.

“Hey, man, you’re calling earlier than expected. Did you ditch Annie?”

“No, she’s asleep.”

“You left Annie to call me from your apartment?”

“No, she’s asleep in my apartment.”

“Holy shit,” Ryan said.

“Don’t make anything of it.”

“Dude, this is a big deal. You haven’t had a woman back to that place…”

“Ever,” he said, finishing off Ryan’s sentence. “I know.”

“Why are you calling?” Ryan asked after a slight hesitation.

“To check on Tara. To see that she had a good night. Did she settle okay? Also, I think I might be in love and last night I fucked up big time.” He made sure to say the last part fast.

He told Ryan everything. He never kept secrets from his best friend. Ryan was silent but Caleb waited. There was no way he was repeating anything he said.

“Okay, okay, first of all, Tara is more than fine. She slept through. She ate her food. The girls adore her. Katherine loves her, I love her. She’s a fantastic baby. She settled fine. There was a rough patch when we tried to get her to sleep, but Annie had left a cardigan and Katherine wrapped it around her, and she fell asleep instantly.”

“That’s good.”

He looked toward the door.

“You’re in love with Annie?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t you think this is moving too fast?”

“That’s why I’m calling you. I don’t think this is moving too fast. I can’t stop the way I feel. Annie is … she’s amazing. She’s smart, funny, and I don’t want to leave her.”

“Okay, we’ll come back to that.”

“You’re saying okay a lot.”

“There’s a lot to digest.”

“Not really,” Caleb said.

“How did you fuck it up? Let’s get to that part.”

Caleb scrunched up his face and clenched his hands tightly, but not too tight as to break his phone. He took a deep breath, and released it slowly. “We came to my place last night and things happened, and I … er … I didn’t wear a rubber.”

“What?” Ryan’s voice got loud to the point Caleb had no choice but to pull the phone away.
